NPC Focus - Gibupgagool
Gibupgagool - more commonly called Gib - is a singular presence within Ville des Marai, the only kuo-toa permitted within the city walls. His very existence there is an exception made through long familiarity and careful trust. Unlike others of his kind, Gib possesses a calm disposition that borders on unnatural for his species, paired with a sharp and deliberate intelligence. He speaks both Common and Franche with surprising fluency, though his voice carries an unusual quality - each word sounding like dripping water or the soft popping of bubbles beneath the surface.
What sets Gib apart most clearly, however, is his nature. Where kuo-toa are often regarded with fear and suspicion, Gib has demonstrated time and again that he harbors no malice. Even Sam Smorkle, known for her caution and scrutiny, has verified this on multiple occasions. This absence of cruelty is not performative or restrained - it is simply who he is. As a result, while he is never fully free from wary glances, he is tolerated, and in some circles quietly accepted.
Gib earns his living as a guide, offering his services to those who need to navigate the western bayou and the treacherous lands beyond. His knowledge of the swamps is extensive, built from years of movement through waterways, ruins, and shifting terrain that few others understand. When traveling with a group, other kuo-toa will not attack, though they remain watchful and defensive, their caution never fully lowered. Gib is also aware of several ancient ruins buried deep within the marsh, and while he will lead others to their thresholds, he refuses to enter them himself, guided by a superstition he does not attempt to justify.
Despite this boundary, his reliability is rarely questioned. Gib operates with a simple but firm structure - those he guides are expected to return within an agreed time, typically a single day. If that time passes without their return, he does not simply walk away. Instead, he seeks help, organizing or joining efforts to retrieve those who may be lost or in danger. There are several who owe their lives to this quiet sense of responsibility, though Gib himself does not speak of it unless asked directly.
Within the city, Gib takes deliberate steps to reduce the fear his presence might cause. He wears a green hooded cloak marked with the word “friendly” embroidered in the major languages of Ville des Marai, a simple but effective gesture of intent. Even so, his appearance - a five-foot figure carrying the scent of stagnant water, fish, and marsh decay - is difficult for many to overlook. He keeps his distance at first, allowing others to decide their comfort before approaching. It is a habit born not of shame, but of experience, and one that reflects the careful balance he maintains between two worlds that were never meant to meet.
